A special issue of Acta Mathematica Scientia, to be published in 2011, will be dedicated to the 85th birthday of Peter D. Lax, who is one of
the most prominent mathematicians of the past hundred years. Peter Lax has made important and seminal contributions in many areas of pure and applied mathematics, including  the theory of integrable systems and solitons, with applications to fluid dynamics and physics, scattering theory, and the theory of shock waves in hyperbolic conservation laws, with applications to gas dynamics. He also exerted a great influence in launching the field of scientific computation. Over the years, Peter Lax has been a great supporter of mathematics in China, having helped numerous Chinese mathematicians. We invite contributions to the special issue from students, postdocs and other colleagues and friends of Peter Lax. If you plan to contribute a paper, please inform the Standing Editors of the special issue, by March 31, 2011.

TWO POSITIVE SOLUTIONS TO THREE-POINT SINGULAR BOUNDARY VALUE PROBLEMS

    Acta mathematica scientia,Series B. 2011, 31 (1):  29-38.  DOI: 10.1016/S0252-9602(11)60205-1
    Abstract ( 752 )   RICH HTML PDF (176KB) ( 1205 )   Save

In this article, we consider the existence of two positive solutions to nonlinear second order three-point singular boundary value problem: −u′′(t) = λf(t, u(t)) for all t ∈(0, 1) subjecting to u(0)=0 and αu(η)=u(1), where η∈(0,1), α∈[0,1), and λ is a positive parameter. The nonlinear term f(t, u) is nonnegative, and may be singular at t=0, t=1, and u=0. By the fixed point index theory and approximation method, we establish that there exists λ∗ ∈ (0,+1], such that the above problem has at least two positive solutions for any λ ∈ (0, λ) under certain conditions on the nonlinear term f.

ABSTRACT CAPACITY OF REGIONS AND COMPACT EMBEDDING WITH APPLICATIONS

    Acta mathematica scientia,Series B. 2011, 31 (1):  49-67.  DOI: 10.1016/S0252-9602(11)60207-5
    Abstract ( 1111 )   RICH HTML PDF (252KB) ( 683 )   Save

The weighted Sobolev-Lions type spaces W lpγ(Ω; E0, E) = W lpγ (Ω; E) \ Lp, γ(Ω; E0) are two Banach spaces and E0 is continuously and densely embedded on E. A new concept of capacity of region Ω∈Rn in W lp, γ (Ω; E0, E) is introduced. Several conditions in terms of capacity of region Ω and interpolations of E0 and E are found such that ensure the continuity and compactness of embedding operators. In particular, the most regular class of interpolation spaces Eα between E0 and  E, depending of α and l, are found such that mixed differential operators Dα are bounded and compact from W lp, γ(Ω; E0, E)  to Eα-valued Lp, γ spaces. In applications, the maximal regularity for differential-operator equations with parameters are studied.

Let H(B) be the set of all harmonic functions f on the unit ball B of Rn. For 0 < p, q ≤ ∞ and a normal weight φ, the mixed norm space Hp,q, φ'(B) consists of all functions f in H(B) for which the mixed norm ||·||p,q, φ < ∞. In this article, we obtain some characterizations in terms of radial, tangential, and partial derivative norms in Hp,q, φ'(B). The parallel results for the Bloch-type space are also obtained. As an application, the analogous problems for polyharmonic functions are discussed.

Let g be a non-zero rapidly decreasing function and w be a weight function. In this article in analog to modulation space, we define
the space M( p, q, w) ( Rd) to be the subspace of tempered distributions f ∈(Rd) such that the Gabor transform Vg(f) of f is in the weighted Lorentz space L( p, q, wdμ) (R2d) . We endow this space with a suitable norm and show that it becomes a Banach space and invariant under time frequence shifts for 1≤p, q≤∞. We also investigate the embeddings between these spaces and the dual space of  M( p, q, w) (Rd) . Later we define the space S( p, q, r, wω)(Rd) for 1<p<∞, 1≤q ≤∞. We endow it with a sum norm and show that it becomes a Banach convolution algebra. We also discuss some properties of S( p, q, r, wω) (Rd) . At the end of this article, we characterize the multipliers of

For the 1-parameter closed Lorentzian space motion in L3, we obtain a Holditch Theorem taking into account the Lorentzian matrix multiplication for the closed space curves by using their othogonal projections onto the Euclidean plane in the fixed Lorentzian space. Moreover, we generalize this Holditch Theorem for noncollinear three fixed points of the moving Lorentzian space and any other fixed point on the plane which is determined by these three fixed points.

In this article, we prove the Hyers-Ulam-Rassias stability of the following Cauchy-Jensen functional inequality:
    ||f(x) + f(y) + 2f(z) + 2f(w)|| ≤||2f (x + y/2+ z + w)    (0.1)
This is applied to investigate isomorphisms between C*-algebras, Lie C*-algebras and JC*-algebras, and derivations on C*-algebras, Lie C*algebras and JC*-algebras, associated with the Cauchy-Jensen functional equation
    2f (x + y/2+ z + w )= f(x) + f(y) + 2f(z) + 2f(w).   (0.2)

In this article, cyclic codes and negacyclic codes over formal power series rings are studied. The structure of cyclic codes over this class of rings is given, and the relationship between these codes and cyclic codes over finite chain rings is obtained. Using an isomorphism between cyclic and negacyclic codes over formal power series rings, the structure of negacyclic codes over the formal power series rings is obtained.

In this article, we obtain the large deviations and moderate deviations for egatively dependent (ND) and non-identically distributed random variables defined on (∞,+∞). The results show that for some non-identical random variables, precise large deviations and moderate deviations remain insensitive to negative dependence structure.

In this article, we prove that any complete finite index hypersurface in the hyperbolic space H4(−1)(H5(−1)) with constant mean curvature H satisfying H2 > 64/63(H2 > 175/148 respectively) must be compact. Specially, we verify that any complete and stable hypersurface in the hyperbolic space H4(−1) (resp. H5(−1)) with constant mean curvature H satisfying H2 > 64/63 (resp. H2 > 175/148 ) must be compact. It shows that there is no manifold satisfying the conditions of some theorems in [7, 9].
